Salisbury University Student United Way is happy to be back out and about with fundraising and volunteer opportunities and events in our community.
In March, SUSUW partnered with the SU Clarke Honors College to engage in a few volunteer projects. Students collected almost 200 makeup bags for the City of Salisbury’s Housing & Homelessness Division to use for their Hi, Jean! Program. The bags are used to hold feminine hygiene products and supplies for young women and girls in need.
SUSUW also partnered with SU Clarke Honors College for a cleanup day at Parsons Cemetery on March 19. It was a beautiful day to be outside, cleaning up the cemetery and doing our first in-person volunteer project and beautifying this historic cemetery.
April was a very busy month, with the first virtual Spring 5K from April 15-18. In a unique twist, this event included an on-campus scavenger hunt on April 17 and a 50/50 raffle. Thank you to all who participated! Special thanks to Etch Art for the medals and local businesses who donated gift cards.
In partnership with Lower Shore Enterprises, SUSUW hosted a shred day and canned food drive on April 30. Over 773.4lbs of paper were shredded and the event raised over $750.00! Students also collected canned food items to distribute to local nonprofit agencies in need and we appreciate everyone who came out to support this event!
Students from SUSUW and the SU Clarke Honors College partnered with Chesapeake Housing Mission to build a ramp for a lovely couple in Somerset County on April 24th. Volunteers worked from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., hammering nails, cutting wood, staining, leveling and digging to build a 30-foot ramp from the homeowner’s side door to their driveway allowing much easier access into and out of their home.
SUSUW’s last club meeting was April 22. We are looking forward to the fall semester with volunteer opportunities at the NFF. If you would like to be or know anyone interested in participating in SUSUW please email sustudentunitedway@gmail.com. Applications for the group’s executive team are accepted through May 7.
We are going to miss our students this summer, but we’re looking forward to many more volunteer opportunities next year and our Halloween Zombie 5K which is tentatively scheduled for October 23. Please follow SUSUW on Instagram and Facebook for updates, information and opportunities to get involved.
Special congratulations on our SUSUW President, Johannah Cooper, who is graduating on May 14. We can’t thank Johannah enough for her service and dedication to SUSUW, the SU community and the Lower Shore community at large. We will miss you Johannah!
